June 8th is World Oceans Day. In order to enhance public awareness of protecting the ocean, from June 6th to 8th, Dangan Town recruited volunteers to carry out 5 consecutive coral conservation and beach cleaning activities under the theme of "Good Sea, You".
Due to the fact that this event needs to be conducted underwater, professional coaches from the Dangan Town New Era Civilization Practice Maritime Emergency Rescue Volunteer Service Team conducted diving training for volunteers before the event, teaching them professional underwater movements and safety details to ensure their safety.
After completing the training, volunteers went into the water one after another to clean up and salvage underwater garbage. The main task is to salvage the 'Ghost Net'. The so-called 'ghost nets' mainly refer to discarded fishing nets, some of which can even stretch for several kilometers and are a large proportion of plastic waste in the ocean. These drifting fishing nets in the sea are also known as "ghost nets", which are "death traps" for marine animals. Various marine creatures are trapped in dense net eyes, and some are even entangled by fishing nets until death.
During this period, under the guidance of professional diving instructors, volunteers came to the waters of Wailingding Island and carried diving equipment "fully armed" to dive into the seabed. Due to low underwater visibility and high water pressure, volunteers cautiously and slowly dived while collecting and salvaging waste such as household garbage from the seabed. During the process, they successfully salvaged an abandoned fishing net. Subsequently, volunteers will also fix the coral branches that have been affected by underwater garbage at the coral cultivation base for secondary cultivation, contributing to the protection of the "underwater forest". Returning to the shore, volunteers also worked together to carefully clean up household waste on the beach, further assisting in marine ecological restoration.
It takes hundreds of years for the ocean to degrade a small plastic bag or bottle. Every action taken by volunteers can create a better living environment for marine organisms. "The person in charge of the Dangan Town New Era Civilization Practice Maritime Emergency Rescue Volunteer Service Team called for more environmentalists and ocean lovers to join the service team and contribute to the protection of the ocean.
